The Mitchie Mitchell Foundation provides academic scholarships to high school students who are survivors and immediate family members of people injured or killed by drunk drivers. The foundation also provides counseling and educational support to city, state, corporate entities, schools, churches and individuals on the impact of drunk driving on society.
*In 2009, 10,839 people were killed in alcohol related crashes with BACs above .08. In comparison to other national tragedies, 3.1 times more people died in one year due to alcohol related crashes than during 9/11 and the Iraq War. Alcohol-impaired driving fatalities constituted 31.7% of the total 41,059 vehicle crashes. Every 31 minutes a person is killed in alcohol related crashes in America. Even with the current laws, alcohol is still the leading cause of death among teenagers in highway crashes. Drivers up to age 24 account for 30% of all alcohol related crashes. The total financial cost of consequences of alcohol use by youth is estimated at $58,043 billion per year, the equivalent of $216.22 for every man, woman and child in the United States.
If you find these numbers outrageous, it is time for you to get involved. Drunk driving is a national problem that touches the lives of loved ones each day. Words cannot express the pain of losing a child, mother, father, other family members or friends to the crime of drunk driving.

….The Unhealed Wound” I have a wound that will never heal; a wound that will stay unhealed for a lifetime; a wound that stopped my sunshine from shining; a wound that makes my morning sky cloudy; a wound that makes my tears flow daily; a wound that was caused by the senseless disregard of life and the law; caused by the criminal actions of a drunk driver. I have an unhealed wound.” — Joyce E. Adejumo
